The Premier Album of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Number One Spot.

At first glance, this album might appear more like a difficult scholarly quiz rather than the latest pop album by a musician whose last hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Split into four distinct sections and performed in 13 languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged work that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often via the lens of various saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a long roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars appear quite small.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album manages to avoid dry intellectual posturing feels almost a miracle, with full credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, its stakes are far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that really raises her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its tornado. When she's tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless want to be alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Then, everything drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in like cartoonish force. The song then segues into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never quite know—nor wish to predict—what you is going next."

Nearly every track ends at a completely distinct point from where it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins out moody and brooding, with menacing beats, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is straddling the line of radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that the album has become the artist's first release to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in English builds around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. This trick is repeated on another expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents pop on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of looming artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that requires time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While other major pop albums of the year felt like feasting on scraps, this record is a lavish banquet where the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
